Which cookies the services set, and why most pages set none at all.

What we set

Session cookie: set when you sign in, so that the service knows it is you. Strictly necessary; removed when you sign out.
Security token: set on pages with forms, to prevent forged requests. Strictly necessary.
Preference: where a service remembers your language or theme. Strictly necessary for that feature to work.

Pages that you can read without signing in and without a form generally set no cookies at all. That is why most of our services show no cookie banner: there is nothing to consent to.

Measurement without cookies

Audience measurement runs on our own installation of Umami, which sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses. We chose it precisely so that reading a page does not require a consent dialogue.

Third-party content

Where a page embeds material from another provider — a video, a map, a payment form — that provider may set its own cookies once the material is loaded. Such embeds are named on the page that carries them.
